Launch of Book on Data Protection Laws Co-authored by Firm’s Senior Partner

On 11th October 2019, Obhan & Associates organized the book launch party of ‘Data Protection Laws Demystified’ at the Delhi Gymkhana Club. The book is co-authored by the Firm’s Senior Partner, Ms. Ashima Obhan, who heads the Corporate and M&A team. The other co-authors of the book are Ms. Anghrija Chakraborty, who is currently the Associate Director; R&D, Operations and Enabling Functions Compliance Business Partner at Astra Zeneca and Mr. Amar Kumar Sundaram, Head of Legal at Royal Bank of Scotland. The book is published by OakBridge Publishing Private Limited.

This book comes at a time of impending sweeping changes in policy and tactical challenges in the field of data protection, privacy and cyber security. As the world moves towards an increasingly digital, and internet and AI driven model, there are rapid and sea-changes in the privacy, data protection and cyber security legislations. Governments and policymakers are scampering to catch up. Due to this growth and change, it is expected that there will be rapid changes both in legislation as well as in policy.

Considering that India does not have a specific data protection legislation, except for the blanket Information Technology Act 2001, and some sector-specific laws & regulations that address some personal data protection requirements, and there is a lot of talk around the proposed Data Privacy Bill, the Aadhar Card judgement, the “Right to Privacy Judgement” and more, the authors felt that a comparative experience of other jurisdictions would highlight what is required in India.

The Chief Guest for the launch event was Mr. Shivendra Singh, Vice President – Global Trade Development, NASSCOM.

Mr. Singh is heading the Global Trade Development Department at NASSCOM and responsible for global positioning of NASSCOM and industry. His primary role is to Develop, Direct, Strategize and implement all NASSCOM international efforts regarding Market development, Policy advocacy, Communication and Outreach activities. He has a hands-on role in formulating and executing strategies to enhance the reputation of the industry globally focusing upon innovation and value arbitrage. Mr. Singh is closely engaged with the Government of India and industries across in India and globally. He is also working with MNC’s to support them in the Indian market.

The evening was fun filled with groovy music, engaging conversations and lots of food and drinks!
